Yesterday we had a lesson with Bea which was much needed! After our lesson with Hannah on Tuesday we had a couple of sessions in the school, trot work on point, left rein canter is ok, just need to keep thinking forward. Right rein canter……. dogs dinner! 🙁
So i came to the lesson very much convinced it is me causing the problems we are having, am i collapsing to the inside, over thinking the transition, legs in wrong position because we’re in a flap….. After filling Bea in on everything since her last visit we got down to work.
We worked on outside flexion while keeping the forward motion, not allowing Cash to get stuck or behind the leg. Moving on to Leg Yield away from the fence to the centre line and then back in a 1/2 10m circle to join the fence we had just left before LY away to the centre again, we did this a few times on each rein and by the end of the exercise i could really feel a difference in Cash’s suppleness.
We then set to work on the right canter lead, to start with we worked on a square, making sure Cash was moving away from my legs when asked, particularly my outside leg. We then went up the long side asking for the transition into the corner with me turning to the outside (slight outside flexion for Cash) as we ask for the transition which worked the first couple of times. We then came onto a circle away from the track (Cash likes to hug the fenceline on the right rein) and popped a pole on the floor and this seemed to help. No fenceline meant i could keep him straighter(?!) and 80% of the transitions we’re on the right lead. Bit of homework, work off the track, keep shoulders straight, keep impulsion going, slight outside flexion until we improve on the suppleness and give with the inside rein to free the inside shoulder at transition.
Finished off with taking a look at the left canter, really just need to work on the rhythm and keeping it as forward as the right rein, which coincidentally/annoyingly is his stronger canter when we get the lead right!
Couple of days off for me now due to work, Cash will either Hack or go on the walker and then a bit of homework to do over the weekend before Bea is back on Wednesday. I’m also going to stock up on some carrots and start doing some stretches with Cash at the end of the week 🙂
